Here is what I've been doing lately:

Last week I took my comprehensive exams: sixteen hours of tests, covering sixty-four credits of class from the last few years. That was followed on Tuesday by the most difficult part, two hours of oral exams. I wasn't too worried -- just enough to spend the previous three weeks focusing exclusively on studying and stressing. The stacks of books represent my four exam areas, each covering four classes. That doesn't include the digital notes for several of the classes.
The exams mark the end of the required classwork for my Ph.D. The next big step is the dissertation proposal, which I'm hoping to finish this fall or winter, so I can get on with my year-plus of research. For my department, the exams also complete the master's degree, so I am now Joe Fusion, Master of Science. Yay me. |

"Master of Science"? My, my...aren't WE arrogant.
Congrats. I haven't had to take an exam in eleven years and it feels terrific...although I grow increasingly more stupid with each passing day. I'm sorry. I meant more STUPIDER. :)
Yeech. Just looking at the picture makes my brain hurt.
Arrogance is required -- it's part of the test, in fact.
The studying made me feel smart, but parts of the exams made me feel stupider too. There's way too much information out there, and I can't even process the tiny bit of it I already know...
Congratulations! Although you have always been smarter than me, you are now officially one million times smarter than me. I hope you use that power wisely.
Thanks Liz! I believe only in the accumulation of intelligence, not wisdom, so I use my power in whatever way my whims direct me, paying no heed to consequence. It's great fun!
Dude, stacking books is NOT going to help you get your degree. I suggest reading them instead.
But dude! Stacking is so much more efficient! It'd take me years to read all those.
congratulations on passing them there exams!!! And a masters is nothing to scoff at. Well done!
Thanks! I hope no one scoffs at it, or I will have to fight them -- with science!
Woo! Can't wait to get my robes and pointy wizard hat.
And now you are an older Master of Science.
Happy Birthday.
No wonder you know about the best bit torrent search engines. Well done.
Yeah, my research is pretty much all about filchin' and pilferin'.
It came free with the big fat head, so I figured I should use it for something!
Awesome! :) I'm impressed.
Thanks! Me too. I've had my doubts, at times... | |
