No sunshine [Sep. 28th, 2006|12:58 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
So there was this wonderful girl. We've been dating on and off since the spring, and finally decided to be "serious" in the last month or so. This step was taken knowing that she would be leaving the country for grad school, and that would be that. And that happened this week.

I'm told this kind of break-up is (relatively) easy, but it's sure not feeling that way.

I was unaware that an "easy" break up existed... Unless you're a Vulcan... and even they're not forthright about such things. Time to do as the rest of us... Keep busy.

Maybe not "easy," but "easier." And it may look that way when it's past, but here in the midst of it... not so much.

I'm working at the busy-ness. Thanks.

"Easier" is when the individual has been so turdly it's damn near a relief to get them out of your life.

Again, keep busy. "I'm medically trained I can help."... There's a group doing corn maze crawl tomorrow out at Sauvie Island at 6:30. Could arrange ride for you if you want to go. Otherwise, pocket number (503-720-6661) for a "life line" call later on.

Well, she is not even the tiniest bit turdly, so no respite for me.

Number pocketed! Thanks for the offer. I have an afternoon thing and a late show tomorrow, but maybe I'll give you a call between.

"Turdly" ... now that's an adverb I ought incorporate into my own vocabulary. Like it lots.

I guess I should say "easier," not "easy." And that's probably so, but it's hard to appreciate right now.

Thanks. I'll catch you online at some point -- you're what, 8 hours off?

Yah, that makes it a bit harder. Or weirder. Something.

So, maybe I'll catch you during breakfast, when I'm having a midnight snack.

It's definitely harder when you still like each other. For me, there always has to be extreme loathing (real or imagined) for a break-up to be any kind of smooth.

Also, people who go away to grad school are silly.

Oh, she's silly, but only in all the best ways.

The break might be easier if there was some negative cause, but that would color all the happy feelings we had & still have. I don't regret the decision to be serious, so I guess the good parts are still lingering with me.

You've dealt (are dealing?) with something like this, no? Or are you two staying together through it?

Well, that's the best kind of silly, at least.

We're staying together, although if we hadn't been with each other as long as we have, I doubt that would be the case. But for awhile I thought we might break up and how hard it would be knowing that the reason was practical rather than emotional.

Right. We haven't been serious that long, and she's not planning to move back here even after... Who knows, I guess? I can't see the future, but I can see that the present sucks.

Good luck to you two! That's a tough situation.

I think I will join you, but I should warn that I'll probably be a no-sunshine-soldier. This thing has definitely reminded me of the good points of focusing attention on one amazing person.

Ah, I'm the Yin to that, Yang. I'm a no-sunshine-soldier whose past 12 months have reminded her of the good points of no longer focusing attention on one amazing person.

Yeah, I'd been on that track for the last... year and a half? I guess what this teaches me is that I've had enough of that.

You know, life could stop teaching me lessons, any day now.

I would have like to have met her...damn.

I guess the only thing I have to say is, "who knows what will happen?" Eventually people stop going to grad school either by burnout or graduation. :)

I guess that explains why you seemed preoccupied on my birthday.

You're right, who knows. Maybe you'll meet her someday! My thoughts have certainly strayed to possible futures... Distant and improbable, but possible, I guess.

Yes, I have been a bit preoccupied with this of late. Apologies to all.

*hugs* back at ya.

Bad timing is the worst. :/

...maybe you should take a trip over there?

Sorry you're going through this- I've been there. It sucks but I always found someone else shortly thereafter I stopped crying about it- not to say that the crying isn't valid at all...

Is there any way you can get yourself to a pound cake?

Thanks, Marie.

We talked about me visiting, and I've certainly been thinking of it. I'm sure it'd be great, but it might just prolong the pain. Who knows.

And maybe something will fall in my lap. It could happen, and I'm sure it'd distract... but I just can't imagine looking/working for such a thing anytime soon.

No pound cakes within arm's reach! I'll keep an eye out though.

I suppose the "(relatively) easy" merely applies to wrapping your mind around it: Prohibitive geography is rather tidy, although separation and longing are certainly not "easy"; not tidy.

It's good to let your mind stray to "distant futures" in moderation: envisioning positive life outcomes is refreshing. And such visons are a bit like rehearsals. Don't know what to say about the visiting vs non-visiting: plenty of time to mull over it when the time comes.

Really liking the orange/green scheme here. Neat.

My mind has been straying plenty, but I'm not letting it get too heavy. It's very pleasant to think about, as long as I'm not building expectations out of it. (Which I'm not, so far.) That said... I'm going to visit her in December, and we're both looking forward to it very much.

Thanks! I've had these colors on my site for years... I think about changing it around, but it's so simple and oddly comforting...
